The government is preparing the electricity network for higher renewable energy use, with storage systems, grid upgrades, and hydropower studies expected to support future energy demand.
As more solar and wind projects come online, one challenge becomes harder to ignore: what happens when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing?
The government says the answer lies in energy storage.
Responding to a question in Parliament on Wednesday (10), Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said authorities will introduce energy storage systems to maximise the use of renewable energy as the country works toward generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
Storage Becomes the Missing Link
Solar and wind power can generate large amounts of electricity. However, production often fluctuates depending on weather conditions.
To address this issue, the government plans to introduce energy storage systems that can absorb excess electricity, store it, and release it when needed.
The Prime Minister said these measures form part of the Renewable Energy Development Plan for 2025-2030 prepared by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority.
According to the plan, authorities aim to add 1,264 megawatts of wind power and 2,071 megawatts of solar power capacity over the coming years.
Grid Expansion Underway
The government is also expanding the national transmission and distribution network to accommodate new renewable energy projects.
Without a stronger transmission infrastructure, electricity generated from renewable sources cannot be efficiently delivered to homes and businesses.
The Prime Minister noted that various procurement mechanisms and long-term generation plans are already in place to support the renewable energy transition.
Focus on Hydropower
Alongside solar and wind projects, studies are underway to increase the capacity of existing hydropower plants.
The move forms part of a broader effort to strengthen energy security while reducing reliance on conventional power generation.
As renewable energy capacity grows, storage technology and grid upgrades are expected to play a key role in ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply.
