Staff at Kankesanthurai Post Office will get a new permanent workplace after 36 years, with a Rs. 32.9 million building now under construction.
Work began after officials laid the foundation stone on October 25. The Department of Buildings will oversee construction, which should finish by May 2027.
For staff, the new building aims to solve a long-standing space problem at the existing post office. Better space should help them handle daily work more efficiently and improve service for people in the area.
A Busy Post Office With Limited Space
Kankesanthurai Post Office holds Grade I status and serves more than 3,500 families.
Its work also covers 16 government institutions, six hotels and three industrial establishments. As a result, staff handle postal services for a wide range of people and organisations.
A permanent building can give staff a more suitable place to manage this work. At the same time, better space can help improve the quality of services offered to the public.
New Building Expected by May 2027
Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the government is working to modernise postal buildings and improve services.
Across the country, the government allocated Rs. 600 million for new post office buildings in 2025 and Rs. 400 million for 2026. It also spent Rs. 600 million on postal and administrative building repairs in 2025.
Meanwhile, the wider postal service is getting new equipment and technology. These include 10 trucks, 20 double cabs, CCTV cameras, desktop computers and tablets.
For Kankesanthurai staff, however, the immediate change is much closer to home: after 36 years, construction has started on a permanent building designed to give their post office more space to serve its growing workload.
