WhatsApp has started rolling out bill payments in India, allowing users to pay electricity, water, gas, and other bills inside the messaging app.
The service connects WhatsApp users to 22,722 billers across 30 categories through Bharat Connect.
Users can pay through UPI, debit cards or credit cards.
The rollout will reach Android and iOS users gradually over the next few weeks.
What can users pay through WhatsApp?
The new service covers a wide range of household and financial payments.
Users can pay electricity, gas and water bills. They can also pay FASTag charges, insurance premiums, credit card bills and loan repayments.
To make a payment, users open the payments section through the rupee icon on the WhatsApp home screen.
They then select a bill category and biller before entering their account details.
WhatsApp displays the outstanding amount for confirmation before the user makes the payment.
Users can also save billers they have paid before. The system allows several accounts under one biller, which could help people manage payments for homes, offices or family members.
WhatsApp is expanding its payments business
The bill payment service adds another use for WhatsApp Pay, which is already processing large volumes of digital payments in India.
WhatsApp Pay recorded more than 167 million UPI transactions worth Rs 12,957 crore in July.
A year earlier, it recorded 74.6 million transactions worth Rs 5,412.58 crore during the same month.
That means transaction volume more than doubled year-on-year, while the value of payments also rose sharply.
WhatsApp Pay moved from the 11th to the eighth position among UPI applications during the period.
India is WhatsApp’s largest market, with more than 850 million users.
For Meta, adding bill payments gives those users another reason to use WhatsApp for everyday financial activity.
The company is now gradually expanding the service to more users.
If the rollout gains traction, WhatsApp could move further beyond messaging and become a regular payment tool for millions of users in India.
