The Sri Lanka Navy’s maritime security support operations have brought around USD 3.32 million in foreign exchange earnings over the past year. The Navy started these operations on October 3, 2025. It works with foreign private maritime security companies under agreements with those companies.
The service supports security teams that work aboard merchant vessels. It provides the facilities and services they need for their operations.
28 Foreign Security Companies Use Navy Services
At present, 28 foreign private maritime security companies use services provided through the Navy.
These companies are represented by 10 local agents. The Pettigalawatta Armoury Complex in Galle is part of this operation. The complex stores weapons and equipment owned by the foreign security companies.
In addition, the Navy provides other facilities and services needed by maritime security teams.
The operations are carried out under the full supervision of the Ministry of Defence.
As a result, foreign security teams can use local facilities before they join merchant vessels for their assignments.
Defence Ministry Reviews Navy Operations
Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) recently visited the Navy’s maritime security facilities in Galle. He was accompanied by Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Damian Fernando.
During the visit, the Deputy Minister reviewed the Navy’s role in supporting maritime security teams. He also looked at the progress of the operations. The Deputy Minister then issued instructions to keep the service running efficiently.
The Defence Ministry said the Navy had handled a large number of operations within a short period after taking charge of the service.
Meanwhile, the USD 3.32 million in foreign exchange earnings shows the financial value of the service. It also links the Navy’s maritime facilities with foreign companies serving international merchant shipping.
