Anthropic Puts 5% of Its Shares Into Public-Benefit Fund Ahead of Possible $1 Trillion IPO

Anthropic Puts 5% of Its Shares Into Public-Benefit Fund Ahead of Possible Trillion IPO

Anthropic plans to put 5% of its shares into a new fund that will support public-benefit work linked to artificial intelligence.

The AI company said its Public Benefit Fund could support non-profit organisations and efforts to address AI’s impact on jobs.

The fund will not use its shares for lobbying or political donations in the US or other countries, Anthropic said.

The company’s board could also allocate another 2% of Anthropic’s shares to the fund.

The move comes as Anthropic prepares for possible IPO

Anthropic is laying the groundwork for a possible stock market listing that could value the company at more than $1 trillion, according to reports.

The timing puts the share allocation in focus because the eventual value of the fund would depend on Anthropic’s valuation.

The company has also reported rapid growth in its business.

Anthropic told potential investors that its revenue rose 45% to $16.8 billion in the three months to the end of September.

The company is the developer of Claude, one of the major AI model platforms competing in the fast-growing AI market.

AI’s impact on jobs is part of the wider debate

The fund comes as AI companies face growing questions about the effect of the technology on jobs, safety and society.

Anthropic has reportedly warned in its IPO filing that AI could create severe risks for humanity.

At the same time, companies around the world have reduced thousands of jobs after adopting AI systems. Some businesses have linked those cuts to efficiency gains from using the technology.

Research published by the International Monetary Fund in 2024 estimated that almost 40% of jobs worldwide could be affected by AI. The estimated share rises to about 60% in advanced economies.

Anthropic Chief Intellectual Property Officer Alan Fan said the fund is intended to support work that addresses some of these wider effects of AI.

Technology billionaire Elon Musk also responded to the announcement, saying he would prefer companies to give shares directly to the public.

Anthropic’s proposed fund will now form part of the company’s broader approach to the social effects of AI as it continues to expand its business and prepare for a possible public listing.
