Agriculture Minister Calls for Faster Public Sector Reforms to Boost Economic Growth

Agriculture Minister Calls for Faster Public Sector Reforms to Boost Economic Growth

Public sector reforms must move faster if the country is to achieve economic growth, Agriculture Minister K. D. Lal Kantha said, warning that delays within the state sector continue to hold back development.

Speaking after the launch of renovation work on the Ilwatta Anicut across the Polathumodara River in Welipitiya, Matara, the Minister said the government and the public service must work at the same pace during the country’s economic transition.

He said even strong government policies would have little impact if the state sector failed to implement them efficiently.

“Even if the government can move at a speed of 200 kilometres per hour, if the state sector moves at only 60 kilometres per hour, development will be delayed,” he said.

Recruitment delays and staff shortages remain challenges

Lal Kantha said the public sector still faces staff shortages, limited facilities and lengthy recruitment delays.

He noted that the government increased public sector salaries after taking office and expects to announce further salary increases in the next budget.

The Minister said improving the efficiency of the state sector remains essential despite any political risks.

He added that he would continue to point out weaknesses in the public service, even if doing so affected the government’s popularity, because addressing those issues is necessary to achieve lasting economic change.

Higher farm productivity remains a priority

The Minister also stressed the need to modernise agriculture and improve productivity.

He said farmers in areas such as the Walawe Mahaweli Zone and Ampara already achieve higher yields per acre than many others. Raising productivity in lower-performing areas would help farmers reduce production costs and improve returns.

Lal Kantha said improving agricultural productivity, together with a more efficient public sector, would better support the country’s long-term economic development.
