Maha Cultivation: Fertiliser Stocks Available as Farmers Prepare for Planting

Maha Cultivation: Fertiliser Stocks Available as Farmers Prepare for Planting

Farmers preparing for the Maha cultivation season have been assured that enough fertiliser is available, with distribution already underway.

National Fertilizer Secretariat Director Chandana Lokuhewage said current stocks and incoming supplies are sufficient to meet the season’s requirements. Farmers can obtain fertiliser through Agrarian Service Centres and authorised retailers.

How Much Urea Is Available?

Maha cultivation requires around 180,000 metric tonnes of urea.

About 33,000 metric tonnes have already been distributed across the regions. Fertiliser companies hold another 42,000 metric tonnes in stock.

Three vessels that arrived at the port late last month are carrying 98,700 metric tonnes of urea, which is being unloaded.

Further orders have been placed for another 44,000 metric tonnes during November and December. Based on these stocks and incoming supplies, around 218,000 metric tonnes of urea is expected to be available.

That is about 38,000 metric tonnes above the estimated Maha requirement.

TSP, SSP and MOP Stocks?

Farmers also need basal fertilisers such as Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Single Super Phosphate (SSP).

About 25,000 metric tonnes of basal fertiliser is required for the Maha season. Current stocks are estimated at around 31,000 metric tonnes, with further production planned.

So far, 4,396 metric tonnes of TSP and 511 metric tonnes of SSP have been distributed. Companies hold around 16,700 metric tonnes of TSP and 5,000 metric tonnes of SSP. Plans are in place to produce another 21,000 metric tonnes of TSP and 5,000 metric tonnes of SSP.

Muriate of Potash (MOP) also has a stated seasonal requirement of 57,000 metric tonnes. Current availability stands at around 57,500 metric tonnes, including 5,000 metric tonnes already distributed.

Fertiliser companies hold about 50,500 metric tonnes of MOP, while another 2,000 metric tonnes is planned for import.

What Farmers Need to Do?

For farmers planning Maha cultivation, the immediate message is that fertiliser distribution has started and stocks are available.

Required fertiliser can be obtained through Agrarian Service Centres and authorised fertiliser retailers.

However, the available figures are national supply figures. They do not show how much stock is currently available at each individual centre or retailer. Farmers should therefore check with their local supplier before making their cultivation arrangements.

The National Fertilizer Secretariat says the overall supply position is sufficient to meet the fertiliser needs of the upcoming Maha season.
