Government Begins Fresh Push to Resolve Mullaitivu Land Disputes – Deputy Defence Minister

The government has begun a fresh effort to resolve long-standing land disputes in Mullaitivu, with authorities seeking practical solutions that balance civilian land claims and national security needs.

The discussions centred on land in Keppapilavu, which the Sri Lanka Army currently uses, and Vadduvakkal, where the Sri Lanka Navy occupies land, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Deputy Defence Minister Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) chaired the Civil-Military Coordination Meeting at the Mullaitivu Divisional Secretariat. Senior government officials, security representatives, elected officials and local residents attended the discussions.

Focus on land access and development

Jayasekara said resolving land issues while protecting national security remains important for long-term stability and regional development.

After receiving updates from government officials and military commanders, he instructed the relevant agencies to work together to identify practical and sustainable solutions to the concerns raised.

The government is also reviewing broader regional development issues alongside the land disputes.

Residents raise long-standing concerns

Residents used the meeting to present their concerns directly to government officials. According to the Ministry of Defence, they welcomed the opportunity to discuss long-standing grievances and expressed hope that the discussions would lead to solutions.

Officials from the Ministry of Defence, District Secretariats and other government institutions also attended the meeting.
