Egg Prices Rise as Producers Cite Feed Shortages and Lower Output

Consumers will pay more for eggs from Monday (July 20) after the All Ceylon Egg Producers’ Association announced a price increase, citing feed shortages and a drop in production.

The Association said a white egg will sell for Rs. 41, while a red egg will cost Rs. 42. Association President Sarath Ratnayake announced the revised prices during a media briefing in Kuliyapitiya on Saturday (19).

According to Ratnayake, the change in feed has affected poultry health and digestion, reducing egg production by 20% to 30%.

He also alleged that some traders used chemicals and medicines in animal feed, leading to the deaths of a large number of poultry. He said the situation has caused heavy losses for farmers and further reduced the country’s daily egg production.

Ratnayake blamed the Government and relevant authorities for the feed supply issues. He claimed that officials are aware of the challenges facing the industry but have yet to introduce an effective solution.
