A National Digital Portal to register cooperative members, creating a unified database aimed at improving the management and transparency of the country’s cooperative sector.
The new platform is expected to connect nearly 8.7 million cooperative members through a secure national database, replacing fragmented record-keeping systems with a single digital platform.
The minister further said “the system will securely collect and manage member information while helping strengthen transparency and public confidence in cooperative institutions”.
How Supporting a Large Cooperative Network?
According to the Deputy Minister, Sri Lanka has more than 14,000 registered cooperative societies, of which 8,963 are currently active.
The cooperative sector also provides employment to more than 39,000 people, with women making a significant contribution to the workforce.
Expectation?
The Government expects the digital platform to support greater youth participation, encourage women entrepreneurs and create digital marketplaces for rural products as part of efforts to modernize Sri Lanka’s cooperative movement.
A single national database can help cooperatives improve member services, strengthen governance and support better planning. It also lays the foundation for expanding digital services across one of Sri Lanka’s largest community-based economic networks.
