Transport Update: Digital bus fare payments expand to Uva Province

The government has extended its digital public transport initiative to the Uva Province, enabling passengers to pay bus fares using bank cards, according to the Ministry of Digital Economy.

The introductory programme took place on Friday (09) at the Uva Provincial Auditorium in Badulla. Bus owners affiliated with the Uva Province Passenger Transport Authority attended the session along with representatives from several banking institutions.

During the programme, officials explained how the digital payment system works. The briefing covered transaction processes, settlement methods, and operational requirements. It also highlighted benefits for both commuters and bus operators.

Implementation timeline

Following the discussions, bus owners agreed to introduce the digital fare payment system across all buses operating under the Uva Province Passenger Transport Authority. Authorities expect implementation to take place in phases over the coming months.

Officials noted that the system aims to reduce cash handling, improve transaction transparency, and support faster boarding times for passengers.

Broader digitalization push

According to the Ministry of Digital Economy, the expansion aligns with the government’s wider push to integrate digital payment solutions into everyday public services. The initiative also seeks to increase financial inclusion by encouraging the use of formal banking channels.

The event was attended by Sumudu Ratnayake, Advisor to the Ministry of Digital Economy, along with several senior officials involved in digital infrastructure development.

Editor’s Insight

Digital fare payments move public transport closer to a cashless model. If implemented consistently, the system can improve efficiency, reduce revenue leakage, and build user confidence in digital public services.
