US$17 Million US Grant to Upgrade Digital Systems at Colombo Port

US Million US Grant to Upgrade Digital Systems at Colombo Port

Colombo Port is set to receive support for better digital systems after the United States announced a US$17 million grant to improve maritime documentation, regulatory procedures and information sharing.

The funding will support upgrades to the Maritime Single Window and Port Community System. These platforms connect different parties involved in port operations and trade.

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Eric Stern Meyer announced the grant during a visit to Colombo Port on October 16. He met senior management of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), including Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake.

Ports and Civil Aviation Minister and Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka and Ministry Secretary W. W. S. Mangala also attended the meeting.

Digital Systems to Connect Port Stakeholders

Planned improvements will support better coordination between the SLPA, Customs, shipping lines, terminal operators and other agencies involved in Colombo Port operations.

A Maritime Single Window brings maritime documents and regulatory processes into a digital system. Meanwhile, a Port Community System helps different stakeholders exchange information linked to port activities.

Better integration could reduce paperwork and make information exchange easier between organisations.

What Could Change at Colombo Port?

Improved digital systems could support faster cargo clearance and more efficient vessel and cargo operations.

For shipping companies and other port users, better coordination could make administrative processes easier to manage.

However, the announcement does not provide specific targets for reducing clearance times or paperwork. It also does not give a timeline for completing the planned upgrades.

Colombo Port plays an important role as a transshipment hub in the Indian Ocean. As a result, digital systems that connect port agencies can support wider trade and shipping activity.

The US$17 million grant will therefore focus on the digital infrastructure behind Colombo Port operations, rather than physical port construction.
