Police Open Email Channel To Report Facebook Groups Sharing Obscene Content

Police have opened a new email channel for people to report Facebook groups that share obscene images of women and children, including AI-generated videos.

The Police Computer Crime Investigation Division said the public can send complaints about such content to dir.cid@police.gov.lk.

Police said they are taking steps to identify and disable Facebook groups involved in sharing the material. They also said they will arrest people responsible for running such groups.

The move comes as police report a rise in the circulation of obscene images and videos online.

Police arrest suspect in Beliatta

Police have already arrested a suspect in one such case.

Officers from the Police Bureau for the Prevention and Investigation of Abuse of Children and Women arrested a 21-year-old man in Beliatta.

Police allege that the man operated Facebook groups that published obscene images of women and children.

Officers also took his mobile phone into police custody. Further investigations are continuing.

The arrest shows that police are using both public complaints and their own investigations to identify people behind these groups.

How to report the content

Police have asked anyone who comes across Facebook groups involved in this activity to report them to the Computer Crime Investigation Division.

Complaints can be sent by email to:

dir.cid@police.gov.lk

People with information about individuals involved can also contact the Computer Crime Investigation Division on 011 2381058.

Police said reports of images and videos that cause harassment or distress can help investigators identify those responsible and take action.

With AI-generated content now adding another layer to online abuse, the police are asking the public to report such material rather than allow it to spread further.
