Sugathadasa Aquatic Sports Complex Gets First Major Swimming Upgrade in 25 Years

Sugathadasa Aquatic Sports Complex Gets First Major Swimming Upgrade in 25 Years

The Sugathadasa Aquatic Sports Complex has entered a new chapter with its first major swimming infrastructure enhancement in 25 years, introducing an electronic timing system and internationally recognised competition technology to improve race accuracy and athlete preparation.

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage and Deputy Minister Sugath Thilakarathne officially commissioned the new installations on Friday (24).

The project introduced an electronic timing system, touch pad technology, a digital display board and international-standard starting blocks, replacing systems that had been in service for more than two decades.

Raising Competition Standards

The modern technology is expected to deliver more precise race results while giving swimmers access to training and competition conditions that align with international standards.

It also strengthens the venue’s capacity to stage national and international swimming meets using globally recognised timing and starting systems.

The Ministry said the improvements will provide local swimmers with a more advanced training and competition environment as they prepare for events at home and overseas.

The investment marks the first major modernisation of swimming competition technology at the Sugathadasa Aquatic Sports Complex in 25 years, reinforcing its role as one of the country’s leading venues for competitive aquatic sports.
