Government Reviews Progress of Major Fishery Harbour Projects Ahead of 2027 Budget

The Government has reviewed the progress of several major fisheries infrastructure projects as part of preparations for the 2027 Budget, with attention focused on improving fish production, supporting exports and strengthening the fishing industry.

During a discussion chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat on Monday (July 21), officials assessed the progress of the Myliddy Fishery Harbour Development Project, development work at the Gandara Fishery Harbour, construction of the Rekawa Fishery Anchorage, and the modernisation and rehabilitation of the Karainagar Boat Yard.

The meeting also reviewed the implementation of projects funded under the 2026 Budget by institutions operating under the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources. These included the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR), National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA), National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation (CFHC), Ceylon Fisheries Corporation (CFC), Cey-Nor Foundation Limited and the Central Fish Market Complex.

Officials discussed the progress of programmes aimed at increasing fish production and exports, meeting the country’s protein requirements and improving the livelihoods of fishing communities. They also considered funding proposals and development priorities for the 2027 Budget.

The discussion further reviewed research and development projects carried out by the Ministry of Fisheries and their funding requirements for next year.

Attention was also given to the programme to rebuild fishery harbours damaged by the Ditwah disaster and restore the livelihoods of affected fishing communities. In addition, the President reviewed the progress of a Rs. 189 million programme that provides boats, fishing nets and other equipment to affected fishing families.

The meeting also examined the progress of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative to recycle decommissioned boats and other fibreglass waste as part of efforts to improve environmental sustainability within the fisheries sector.
