New Dengue Guidelines Introduced for All Universities

The new guidelines aim to improve early detection, strengthen disease surveillance and reduce dengue outbreaks that can disrupt academic activities.

New Dengue Guidelines Introduced for All Universities

A new set of national guidelines on dengue surveillance, prevention and clinical management has been introduced for all universities to strengthen efforts to control the spread of the disease and improve campus preparedness.

The guidelines outline measures for the early detection of dengue cases, proper clinical management of patients, stronger disease surveillance and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites. They also encourage universities to actively involve students and staff in dengue prevention programmes.

The initiative was jointly developed by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, the Ministry of Health, the University Grants Commission, the World Health Organization, the National Dengue Control Unit, and the University of Colombo.

Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Madhura Seneviratne said universities located in urban areas and those with nearby student hostels face a higher risk of cluster dengue outbreaks. He said the new guidelines are expected to help institutions identify cases early, strengthen prevention measures and reduce the risk of transmission.

He also stressed that dengue control requires collaboration beyond university campuses, with support from surrounding communities and health authorities playing an important role.

University of Colombo Vice Chancellor Professor Indika Karunathilake said the guidelines would improve awareness among university students and young people on preventing dengue and responding appropriately when infections occur. He added that the initiative would also encourage greater student participation in national dengue prevention efforts.

Professor Karunathilake said academic activities at the University of Colombo are continuing as scheduled, while the university’s health centre has established a system to monitor students with dengue-related symptoms and refer them for appropriate medical care.
