To tackle the problem, the National Council for Road Safety will introduce mandatory inspections for all public transport vehicles, including buses, from September.
Chairman Manjula Kularatne said the program will help ensure that vehicles carrying passengers meet the required safety standards before they operate on public roads.
The Council has already called for applications to recruit qualified technical officers who will conduct the inspections. Once the recruitment process is complete, the program is expected to begin by the end of September.
Under the new program, buses and other public transport vehicles across the country will undergo condition assessments to identify mechanical defects and confirm that they are safe for service.
The inspections form part of a wider effort to improve road safety, reduce preventable accidents and encourage better maintenance of vehicles used for public transport.
