$4 Million Satellite Communications Upgrade to Strengthen Maritime Connectivity

The Fleet Broadband system will provide secure voice and data communications for offshore patrol vessels, improving coordination between ships, aircraft and naval headquarters.

Million Satellite Communications Upgrade to Strengthen Maritime Connectivity

Reliable communications have become a critical part of modern maritime operations, particularly as countries seek to improve surveillance, emergency response and the protection of key shipping routes.

In a move that strengthens maritime technology capabilities, the United States has announced the provision of advanced Fleet Broadband satellite communications systems to the Sri Lanka Navy, enabling vessels to remain connected far beyond coastal waters.

The announcement was made on Friday aboard SLNS Gajabahu at the Port of Colombo by U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Paul Kapur.

Advanced Satellite Technology for Offshore Operations

According to the U.S. Embassy, the Fleet Broadband system is valued at approximately US$4 million, equivalent to more than Rs. 1.2 billion.

The technology, manufactured by Cobham and Inmarsat, will be installed across the Sri Lanka Navy’s offshore patrol vessel fleet.

Officials said the satellite communications platform will provide secure ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore connectivity, supporting both voice and data communications while vessels operate across the Indian Ocean.

The system is also expected to improve real-time information sharing between naval vessels, aircraft and command centres.

Focus on Maritime Security

Authorities say the technology will strengthen maritime domain awareness and improve operational coordination at sea.

The upgraded communications network is expected to support:

  • Maritime surveillance operations
  • Search and rescue missions
  • Emergency response activities
  • Monitoring of sanctioned vessels
  • Efforts to combat illicit trafficking
  • Protection of international shipping routes

For a country located along some of the world’s busiest maritime trade lanes, improved connectivity is increasingly important for monitoring commercial shipping activity and responding to incidents at sea.

Officials Highlight Strategic Value

Speaking at the event, Paul Kapur described the new capability as a major enhancement for naval operations.

He said the system would help eliminate communication gaps at sea while improving the ability to respond to emergencies and disrupt illegal activities across the Indian Ocean.

Deputy Minister of Defence Major General (Retd.) Aruna Jayasekara said the technology would strengthen maritime surveillance capabilities and further support defence cooperation between Sri Lanka and the United States.

The event was also attended by Sri Lanka Navy Commander Kanchana Banagoda.

The deployment reflects the growing role of satellite communications technology in maritime security, where uninterrupted connectivity is becoming essential for operational effectiveness, safety and the protection of global trade routes.
