¥400 Million JICA Grant to Accelerate Digital TV Project Ahead of 2029 Launch

The transition from analogue to digital television is expected to modernise broadcasting infrastructure, improve signal quality, and create opportunities for more efficient use of spectrum resources. To support this effort, the Digital TV Project has secured additional funding from Japan.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide an additional grant of ¥400 million to support the implementation of the Digital Television (Digital TV) Project.

The funding was announced following a review meeting held on June 18 between the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Department of External Resources (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance to assess project progress and address implementation challenges.

Digital TV Launch Planned for 2029

Officials confirmed during the discussion that the country’s digital television service is scheduled to be officially launched in 2029.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister of Finance Anil Jayantha and Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne.

Participants reviewed the project’s current status and discussed measures needed to ensure timely completion of the remaining work.

The Digital TV Project forms part of broader efforts to modernise national digital infrastructure and broadcasting services.

Additional Funding for Public Awareness

According to the Ministry of Digital Economy, the newly approved JICA grant will be used to fund a nationwide public awareness campaign.

The campaign is expected to educate consumers about the transition to digital television and help households understand the changes required to access the new service.

Public awareness is considered a key component of the project, as viewers will need to prepare for the shift from existing broadcasting systems.

Focus on Faster Implementation

The meeting also reviewed financial and administrative measures aimed at accelerating project implementation.

Officials discussed ways to complete the remaining construction work and technical requirements without further delays.

Ensuring timely execution remains important as authorities work towards the planned 2029 launch date.

Technical Support Continues

In addition to the new grant, officials revealed that a separate Technical Cooperation Project is also underway to support the successful implementation of the Digital TV Project.

The initiative is expected to provide technical expertise and operational support throughout the remaining stages of the programme.

Representatives from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL), the Digital TV Project, the Ministry of Digital Economy, the Department of External Resources, and the Ministry of Finance attended the discussions.
