Renewable Energy Project Set to Transform Power Supply in Delft Island

The project will replace diesel-powered generation with solar, wind, and battery storage systems to improve electricity supply and support economic activity.

Renewable Energy Project Set to Transform Power Supply in Delft Island

Reliable electricity remains a key requirement for economic development, public services, and quality of life in island communities. A new renewable energy project now underway in Delft Island is expected to reduce dependence on diesel-powered generation while providing a more stable electricity supply.

The project will introduce a hybrid renewable energy system for Delft Island, Nainativu, and Analaitivu, replacing the existing diesel-based power generation model that has long supplied electricity to these communities.

Authorities say the shift is expected to lower operating costs, improve energy security, and support long-term sustainable development in the islands.

Moving Away from Diesel Power

For years, electricity in the three islands has been generated using diesel-powered systems.

However, transporting fuel by sea has increased operational costs and created logistical challenges. In addition, diesel-based generation has raised environmental concerns and limited the long-term sustainability of power supply.

The new project aims to address these issues by introducing renewable energy sources supported by battery storage technology.

Hybrid System Combines Solar, Wind and Battery Storage

Under the project, electricity will be generated through an off-grid hybrid renewable energy system.

The system will include:

  • A 1.7 MW solar power plant
  • A 750 kW wind power plant
  • A 2.4 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

An Energy Management System (EMS) will also be installed to manage electricity generation and distribution while maintaining a stable power supply.

The combination of solar, wind, and battery storage is expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while ensuring continuous electricity availability.

Economic Benefits for Delft Island

Minister of Energy Anura Karunathilaka recently inspected the project’s progress and instructed officials to expedite implementation.

According to the Minister, the project is expected to support economic activity across the islands, particularly in the fisheries sector, which remains an important source of income for many residents.

Improved electricity access could also help small businesses operate more efficiently and create opportunities for future investment and economic growth.

Better Support for Public Services

Beyond economic benefits, authorities expect the project to strengthen essential public services.

A more reliable power supply can support healthcare facilities, educational institutions, communication services, and other critical infrastructure across the islands.

For residents, uninterrupted electricity could improve daily living conditions while reducing disruptions caused by power limitations.

A Step Towards Energy Transition

The project forms part of broader efforts to increase the use of renewable energy and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

For Delft Island and the surrounding communities, the transition to solar and wind energy represents a shift towards a more sustainable and reliable power system.

The inspection visit was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Energy, the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority, the Indian Consulate General in Jaffna, and representatives of other institutions involved in the power sector.
