9 Essential Food Items Now Cheaper Lanka Sathosa Announces New Price Reductions

Households looking to manage their monthly grocery bills may see some relief as Lanka Sathosa has reduced the prices of several commonly purchased food items.

The price reductions, which took effect from June 18, were introduced following instructions from the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Cooperative Development.

The revised prices cover key staples, including rice, wheat flour, sugar, and chickpeas, products that form part of daily consumption for many families.

Wheat Flour Records Largest Price Reduction

Among the items affected, wheat flour received the biggest price cut.

The retail price of wheat flour has been reduced by Rs. 10 per kilogram, bringing the selling price down from Rs. 169 to Rs. 159.

The reduction is expected to benefit both households and small food businesses that rely heavily on flour-based products.

Several Rice Varieties Also Reduced

Lanka Sathosa has also lowered prices across multiple rice categories.

The revised reductions are:

  • Ponni Samba: Down by Rs. 6 per kg
  • Red Nadu Rice: Down by Rs. 5 per kg
  • Samba Red Kekulu Rice: Down by Rs. 5 per kg
  • Local White Nadu Rice: Down by Rs. 5 per kg
  • White Kekulu Samba Rice: Down by Rs. 5 per kg
  • White Kekulu Rice: Down by Rs. 3 per kg

The reductions come as rice remains one of the largest components of household food expenditure.

Sugar and Chickpeas Included

In addition to rice and flour, Lanka Sathosa has reduced the prices of two other commonly purchased food items.

The price of chickpeas has been lowered by Rs. 5 per kilogram, while white sugar has been reduced by Rs. 2 per kilogram.

What It Means for Consumers

The latest price adjustments are aimed at providing some relief to consumers facing rising living costs.

Since the reductions apply to several staple products purchased regularly by households, shoppers visiting Lanka Sathosa outlets from June 18 onwards will be able to access these items at lower prices.

The impact on monthly household spending may vary depending on purchasing patterns, but the reductions are expected to benefit consumers who frequently purchase rice, flour, sugar, and chickpeas.
