The government is placing digitalisation at the heart of its efforts to improve public services, with the education sector becoming one of the latest areas to undergo a major technological transformation.
Speaking at the launch of the first phase of the Human Resources Module of the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) and the pilot project of the e-Thaksalawa Learning Management System at Temple Trees on Saturday (June 06th), Prime Minister and Education Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya “said digital technology is essential for building transparent and efficient public services”.
Her message was clear. Better services require better systems. And better systems require accurate data and digital tools.
The newly launched National Education Management Information System aims to modernise the management of teachers and education administration. Instead of maintaining separate provincial databases, the platform will connect information from national and provincial schools through a single network.
Authorities expect the system to improve transparency in teacher recruitment, transfers, and promotions while reducing administrative inefficiencies.
Technology to Support, Not Replace
The Prime Minister stressed that digitalisation should strengthen public service delivery without replacing the human element.
She noted that technology is not intended to replace teachers. Instead, it should help them perform their roles more effectively.
Alongside NEMIS, the government also launched the pilot phase of the e-Thaksalawa Learning Management System.
- The platform is expected to improve teaching, learning, and student assessments.
- It will also help expand access to educational resources for underprivileged schools and children with special educational needs.
- The first phase of NEMIS will facilitate teacher transfers in the Sabaragamuwa, Western, Southern, and North Western provinces before expanding to other areas.
The government highlights digitalisation as a key tool to improve transparency, efficiency, and service delivery in the education sector.
