The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has awarded Rs. 61.38 million in financial incentives to athletes and coaches who achieved success at major international sporting events during 2024 and 2025.
A total of 37 athletes received awards at a ceremony chaired by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, with the programme recognising performances at the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships, the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, the 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, and the 2025 Asian Youth Games.
The largest individual award was presented to Paralympic silver medallist K.A. Samitha Dulan, who received Rs. 15 million for his achievement in the men’s javelin event at the Paris Paralympics.
Meanwhile, G.L. Lahiru Achintha received Rs. 5 million after winning gold in the 1,500-metre event at the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
The incentive programme reflects ongoing efforts to provide greater recognition and financial support for athletes and coaches competing at the highest levels of international sport. Such rewards are increasingly viewed as part of a broader strategy to encourage performance, retain sporting talent, and support long-term athlete development.
The awards also align with preparations for future international competitions, including the government’s “Mission Olympic 2028” initiative, which aims to strengthen the country’s competitiveness on the global sporting stage.
While financial incentives alone do not guarantee sporting success, policymakers and sporting authorities increasingly see athlete support systems as an important component in developing high-performance sport. The latest awards signal continued investment in athletes who have delivered results internationally and those expected to represent the country in future competitions.
