Mental Health Risks From Mobile Phone Use Among Children, says Dr. Senani Wijethunga

A child and adolescent psychiatrist has warned that excessive use of mobile phones is leading to a rise in mental health problems among children and teenagers.

Mental Health Risks From Mobile Phone Use Among Children, says Dr. Senani Wijethunga

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday (26), Dr. Senani Wijethunga said many adolescents are now receiving medical and psychological treatment due to uncontrolled mobile phone use.

She explained that the problem grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools moved to online learning, and children had limited social interaction. As a result, many children developed heavy dependence on mobile phones.

Rising Cases in Teenagers

Dr. Wijethunga said this behaviour has now turned into a serious concern. Many adolescents show signs of behavioural addiction and need clinical care.

In addition, she noted that more teenagers are also receiving treatment for mental health disorders linked to substance abuse.

According to her, children between the ages of 13 and 18 are being referred more often to specialised clinics for support and treatment.

A Growing Social Issue

Dr. Wijethunga warned that this trend is becoming a major social and public health issue.

She stressed that parents and schools must pay closer attention to children’s mobile phone habits and mental well-being. She also highlighted the need for early guidance and counselling to prevent long-term harm.

Health experts say balanced phone use and regular social interaction are important to protect the mental health of young people.
