Central Bank Steps Up Enforcement With Rs. 14.6 Million in Penalties

The Financial Intelligence Unit penalised 11 financial institutions after identifying breaches of reporting rules, highlighting continued efforts to improve anti-money laundering compliance.

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has imposed Rs. 14.6 million in administrative penalties on 11 financial institutions for breaching the Financial Transactions Reporting Act, No. 6 of 2006.

The FIU identified the violations between October 2025 and March 2026, the Central Bank said.

The penalties relate to failures to comply with the reporting requirements set out in the Financial Transactions Reporting Act.

The FIU serves as Sri Lanka’s regulator for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT). It oversees compliance with laws designed to detect suspicious financial activity and reduce financial crime.

The Central Bank did not disclose the names of the institutions that received the penalties.

Penalties Credited to Consolidated Fund

The Central Bank said all money collected through the administrative penalties has been credited to the Consolidated Fund.

The enforcement action reflects the FIU’s continued oversight of financial institutions and their obligations under Sri Lanka’s anti-money laundering framework.
