India Accelerates Technology Push with Hydrogen Train and Private Space Launch

India has unveiled two major technology projects this week, launching its first hydrogen-powered train and its first privately developed orbital-class rocket as the country expands investments in clean transport and commercial space.

India Accelerates Technology Push with Hydrogen Train and Private Space Launch

India showcased its growing technology ambitions this week with two major developments that reflect its drive to modernize transport, expand private innovation and strengthen its position in advanced engineering.

On Friday, the country introduced its first hydrogen-powered passenger train, offering a cleaner alternative to conventional rail transport. A day later, Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital-class rocket, opening a new chapter for the country’s commercial space industry.

Together, the two projects highlight India’s continued investment in future technologies, from zero-emission rail transport to private space launches.

Clean Transport Moves Forward

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the country’s first hydrogen-powered train, which operates on the 89-kilometre Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. The 10-coach train uses a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system that generates electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, producing only water and steam.

Calling it “a very significant day in the direction of self-reliant India and sustainable development,” Modi said the project reflects the country’s commitment to cleaner transport and technological progress.

The Railway Ministry said the train was developed entirely in India, although officials confirmed that some components, including the fuel cells, were imported. India also opened its largest railway hydrogen storage and refueling facility in Jind to support future hydrogen-powered train operations.

With the launch, India joined a small group of countries, including Germany, Japan, China and the United States, that are testing or operating hydrogen-powered trains.

Private Companies Reach Orbit

India continued its technology drive on Saturday when Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace launched Vikram-1 under Mission Aagaman from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Named after Indian space pioneer Vikram Sarabhai, the four-stage rocket is built with an all-carbon composite structure and uses in-house propulsion systems, including 3D-printed engines and high-thrust solid-fuel boosters.

After a brief delay caused by navigation checks, the rocket lifted off carrying technology demonstration payloads from Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve, DCubed and Skyroot’s SCOPE, along with a postcard from Prime Minister Modi and an artwork titled Cosmic Bloom.

The successful launch moves Skyroot closer to its goal of providing commercial launch services, allowing customers to place satellites into customized orbits. The company describes the concept as a “cab service to space.”

These latest developments come as India continues to invest heavily in science, engineering and infrastructure. While one project aims to reduce carbon emissions through cleaner rail transport, the other expands opportunities for private companies in the rapidly growing global space industry.

Together, they reflect a broader strategy to build technological capability across multiple sectors while supporting long-term economic growth.
