The condition of wholesale markets plays a direct role in food distribution, trader productivity, and the daily experience of thousands of buyers and sellers. Authorities are now turning their attention to improving one of the country’s busiest trading hubs.
The “Clean Manning” programme was launched this morning at the Peliyagoda Manning Market under the patronage of Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Upali Pannilage.
The initiative was organised to address concerns relating to cleanliness, environmental conditions, and public convenience at the wholesale market.
Focus on Market Environment
The Peliyagoda Manning Market serves as the country’s principal wholesale market for vegetables and fruits and attracts large numbers of traders and consumers each day.
Authorities observed that the market premises lacked the level of cleanliness and environmental comfort required for traders to conduct business under suitable conditions.
Concerns relating to waste management, public convenience, and the overall market environment had also been identified.
The programme aims to improve conditions for both traders and customers while creating a cleaner and more organised marketplace.
Joint Effort by Multiple Institutions
The “Clean Manning” programme was organised jointly by the Peliyagoda Manning Market General Traders’ Association, the Peliyagoda Urban Council, the Peliyagoda Police Station, and the Urban Development Authority.
The initiative reflects a coordinated effort between public institutions and market stakeholders to improve the condition of the wholesale market premises.
Wide Participation in Cleanup Drive
The event was attended by the Deputy Director General of the Urban Development Authority, the Officer-in-Charge of the Peliyagoda Police Station, and the President of the Peliyagoda Manning Market General Traders’ Association.
Police officers, government officials, members of the security forces, and a large number of traders also participated in the programme.
Authorities expect the initiative to contribute to a cleaner trading environment while improving the overall experience for businesses and consumers who rely on the market each day.
