Discussions on strengthening legal protections for children, preventing violence against children and addressing child malnutrition were among the key issues raised when a delegation from the United Nations Children’s Fund met Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya at Temple Trees on June 4.
The meeting took place following the UNICEF Executive Board delegation’s three-day visit to the country.
The discussions focused on measures to improve child welfare and strengthen protections for vulnerable children. Attention was also given to ensuring that legal safeguards are effectively implemented to address challenges affecting children and communities at risk.
Focus on Child Rights and Protection
During the meeting, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the country has a strong policy and legal framework for protecting children. However, she stressed the importance of effective implementation and enforcement to address existing issues.
The discussions also covered efforts to prevent all forms of violence against children and improve outcomes related to child nutrition and well-being.
UNICEF Pledges Continued Support
The Prime Minister thanked UNICEF for its continued support towards programmes aimed at improving the lives of children. She also acknowledged the organisation’s assistance and recovery efforts following Cyclone Ditwah.
UNICEF representatives commended the government’s ongoing education reform programme and expressed their willingness to continue supporting child-focused initiatives and policy outcomes.
The meeting forms part of ongoing cooperation between the government and UNICEF on child protection, education, and social development programmes.
