SEC Warns Investors Over Fake Broker Licence

SEC Warns Investors Over Fake Broker Licence

A fake licence. A company claiming market access. And a regulator stepping in with a warning.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka has cautioned investors against dealing with Samagi Capital (Private) Limited, stating that the company is not authorised to operate as a stockbroker or stock dealer.

The warning follows the circulation of a fraudulent certificate on social media. The document claims that Samagi Capital holds a Broker Dealer Licence issued by the SEC. However, the regulator has confirmed that the certificate is fake and was never issued by its office.

For investors, this is more than a compliance issue. It is a reminder of how quickly misinformation can spread in financial markets.

The SEC has advised the public not to deposit funds into accounts linked to Samagi Capital for the purpose of trading on the Colombo Stock Exchange.

The regulator also urged investors to verify the status of brokers and dealers before making any investment decisions. It said licences can be checked through the official websites of the SEC and the Colombo Stock Exchange.

The commission further advised investors to conduct transactions only through firms that hold valid regulatory approval.

As interest in the stock market continues to grow, authorities say investor awareness remains the first line of defence against financial scams.
