Sri Lanka welcomed more than one million tourists by the end of May, demonstrating resilience in visitor arrivals despite ongoing uncertainty in global travel markets.

Tourist Arrivals Cross 01 Million Despite Global Travel Headwinds

Tourism industry has passed another key milestone in 2026, with total tourist arrivals exceeding one million during the first five months of the year despite growing uncertainty in global travel markets.

According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), 145,745 tourists arrived in the country in May, bringing total arrivals for the year to 1,022,022.

The latest figures are particularly noteworthy because they come at a time when the global tourism industry is facing disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The conflict has affected air travel patterns, increased operating costs for airlines, and created uncertainty across several tourism markets.

Against this backdrop, the increase in arrivals suggests that Sri Lanka continues to remain an attractive destination for international travellers. The May figure was also higher than the 132,919 arrivals recorded in the same month last year, indicating continued growth in visitor numbers despite external challenges.

India remained the country’s largest source market in May, accounting for more than 41% of arrivals with 60,342 visitors. The United Kingdom, China, Germany, and Russia also continued to contribute significant visitor numbers, highlighting the importance of maintaining a diversified tourism market base.

The figures also underline the growing importance of regional tourism. India alone contributed 250,260 visitors during the first five months of the year, reinforcing its position as the country’s most important tourism source market. The United Kingdom and Russia followed with 98,093 and 76,073 arrivals, respectively.

While recent external sector data showed a decline in tourist earnings and arrivals during some months following the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the latest tourism statistics indicate that demand has remained relatively resilient.

For the tourism industry, the one-million-arrival mark is more than a numerical achievement. It reflects the sector’s ability to attract visitors despite geopolitical uncertainty, changing travel patterns, and increased competition among destinations.

The challenge now will be to sustain this momentum during the remainder of the year while increasing visitor spending and extending average lengths of stay. As global travel conditions remain uncertain, maintaining steady arrival growth could play an important role in supporting foreign exchange earnings and broader economic activity.
