External inflows: Workers’ Remittances Cross $8bn in 2025

Sri Lanka’s workers’ remittances surpassed USD 8 billion in 2025 for the first time, reflecting stronger foreign inflows and renewed confidence in formal channels, according to data released by the Central Bank.

According to the Central Bank’s report, total remittance inflows reached USD 8.07 billion during the year. This marked a 22.8% increase compared to USD 6.57 billion recorded in 2024.

Before this, the highest annual remittance inflow was reported in 2016, when workers abroad sent USD 7.24 billion to the country. The 2025 figure therefore sets a new all-time record.

Monthly inflows also reach record levels

Sri Lanka also recorded its highest-ever monthly remittance inflow in December 2025, amounting to USD 879.1 million.

This surpassed the previous monthly record of USD 812.7 million, which was recorded in December 2020 and had remained unmatched until now.

The strong December performance played a key role in lifting annual inflows beyond the USD 8 billion threshold.

Economic relevance

Workers’ remittances remain one of the country’s largest and most stable sources of foreign exchange. Higher inflows support external sector stability, improve foreign currency liquidity, and help cushion pressure on the balance of payments.

Central Bank data also indicates continued reliance on formal banking channels, reflecting improved confidence and transaction transparency.
