Rs. 28 Million Mullaitivu Post Office Opens as Postal Modernization Expands

A new Rs. 28 million post office has opened in Mullaitivu as part of a wider programme to modernise Sri Lanka’s postal service.

The fully equipped Grade I post office is expected to serve 12,231 families in the district. It will also serve government and private institutions, hotels and factories.

The facility will directly serve 5,830 families. Six sub-post offices under its administration will serve another 4,883 families.

The service network also covers 68 government institutions, nine hotels and four factories in the area. Construction began last October and was carried out by the Department of Buildings.

A Wider Postal Investment

The Mullaitivu opening is part of a broader postal infrastructure investment program.

It is the 12th new post office opened under the 2025 Budget allocation for new buildings. The Budget allocated Rs.600 million for new postal buildings, marking the first such funding in about a decade.

The 2026 programme includes another Rs.400 million for new postal buildings and Rs.600 million for renovations.

The modernisation programme also includes investment in transport vehicles, CCTV systems, desktop computers and tablet devices. The Department of Posts has also allocated funds to improve its wider operational infrastructure.

Why This Matters for the people of Mullaitivu?

For Mullaitivu, the investment is not limited to a new building.

The post office serves households as well as businesses and government institutions. Better facilities can therefore support everyday public services and communication needs across the district.

The wider postal investment also points to a shift from maintaining existing infrastructure towards upgrading the physical and technological capacity of the service.

The Department of Posts says the programme is intended to make postal services more efficient, modern and accessible to the public.

The next measure of the investment will be how effectively these new facilities, vehicles and digital tools improve the service people and institutions actually receive.
