Consumers will see changes to the prices of two key household products from today (5). Litro Gas Lanka has cut domestic LP gas prices, while new maximum retail prices for locally produced canned fish also take effect.
Litro Gas Lanka Chairman Channa Gunawardana announced lower prices for all three domestic LP gas cylinder sizes.
Accordingly, a 12.5 kg cylinder will now cost Rs. 4,365 after a Rs. 100 price cut.
The company has also reduced the price of a 5 kg cylinder by Rs. 42. Consumers will now pay Rs. 1,750 for the cylinder.
Meanwhile, Litro has cut the price of a 2.3 kg cylinder by Rs. 20 to Rs. 815.
The new LP gas prices apply from September 5.
Litro Gas Lanka said it decided to lower domestic gas prices for September despite higher international gas prices and difficult exchange rate conditions.
The company said the price reduction aims to provide some relief to consumers.
New price controls for locally produced canned fish
At the same time, a new gazette order has introduced maximum retail prices for locally produced canned fish from September 5.
The authorities issued the order under Section 20(5) of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act No. 9 of 2003.
Accordingly, the maximum retail price for a 155g can will range from Rs. 220 to Rs. 260, while a 425g can will range from Rs. 510 to Rs. 600.
Under the new rules, local manufacturers, packers, distributors and traders cannot charge more than the maximum retail prices set for the specified canned fish products.
They also cannot offer or display those products for sale above the approved maximum prices.
Therefore, traders dealing with the canned fish products covered by the order must follow the new price limits from September 5, 2026.
The measure places a legal ceiling on the retail prices of the specified locally produced canned fish products.
Both developments affect products that form part of household spending.
The Litro decision directly lowers the amount consumers pay for domestic LP gas cylinders. At the same time, the canned fish order limits how much sellers can charge for the products covered by the new price controls.
The two changes bring a fresh round of consumer price measures at the start of September, covering both household cooking gas and locally produced canned fish.
