Kaluwanchikudy to Get First Dedicated Motorcycle Lane

Kaluwanchikudy to Get First Dedicated Motorcycle Lane

Batticaloa’s Kaluwanchikudy will become the first place in Sri Lanka to have a dedicated motorcycle lane. The Government plans to launch the pilot project to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving two-wheelers.

The lane will separate motorcycles from other traffic using rubber dividers. Officials expect to begin construction in the coming months.

Pilot Project Inspired by Malaysia

Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake said the project draws inspiration from Malaysia. The country has used dedicated motorcycle lanes to reduce road accidents.

The Government selected Kaluwanchikudy because many people in the area travel by motorcycle every day. Officials believe the town is the right place to test the new concept.

If the pilot succeeds, the Government plans to introduce similar motorcycle lanes in other parts of the country.

Part of a Wider Road Safety Plan

The Minister announced the project during the launch of the “100 for 100” National Corporate Motorcycle Safety Programme.

The National Council for Road Safety and Hayleys Advantis Ltd jointly organised the programme. It aims to bring together 100 private sector organisations. Each organisation will support 100 motorcycle riders through road safety awareness and training.

Motorcycles are one of the country’s most common forms of transport. They also play an important role in delivery services and small businesses. Safer roads can help reduce accidents, lower economic losses and improve daily transport for thousands of riders.
