Government Plans to Expand Access to Higher and Vocational Education – Prime Minister

Government Plans to Expand Access to Higher and Vocational Education – Prime Minister

The government plans to widen access to higher and vocational education as part of its broader effort to ensure every child has the opportunity to continue learning after leaving school.

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said the government wants education to be recognised as a fundamental right for every child rather than a privilege. She said every student, regardless of their background or where they live, should have access to quality education.

Focus on Education Beyond School

Speaking at the “Nena Isura – 2026” Scholarship Award Ceremony at Temple Trees on Saturday, the Prime Minister said the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education is working to create more opportunities for students after they complete their school education.

She said the ministry aims to expand pathways into universities and vocational training programmes. The goal is to help more young people develop skills that improve their future education and employment prospects.

Greater access to higher education and vocational training can help build a more skilled workforce. It can also support long-term economic growth by preparing students for changing labour market needs.

Scholarship Programme Supports Students

The scholarship ceremony honoured the memory of the late Most Venerable Galboda Siri Gnanissara Thera. The Galboda Siri Gnanissara Thera Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund organised the programme under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent of Gangaramaya Temple, Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thera.

A total of 460 students who passed the Grade Five Scholarship Examination received scholarships. The programme will provide financial support to the students until they complete their G.C.E. Advanced Level education.

The government has not announced new education policies or funding as part of this initiative. However, the Prime Minister’s remarks indicate that expanding access to higher and vocational education remains a key policy priority.
