A lower US tariff is expected to improve export competitiveness and provide relief to exporters after the labour-related tariff on exports to the United States was reduced from 12.5% to 10%.
Welcoming the reduction, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce described the move as an encouraging development for the export sector, saying it reflected the value of sustained engagement between Sri Lankan authorities and their counterparts in the United States.
The Chamber said the lower tariff would provide some relief to exporters operating in an increasingly competitive and uncertain global marketplace while supporting efforts to maintain and expand access to the US market.
The Chamber noted that it had previously expressed concern in early June over the potential impact of the proposed labour-related tariff measures on trade competitiveness and had called for urgent engagement with relevant stakeholders.
Continued Engagement Needed
The Chamber commended the progress achieved by the negotiation team and welcomed the Government’s engagement with the private sector, which enabled industry concerns and perspectives to be presented during the discussions.
While describing the tariff reduction as a positive step, the Chamber stressed the importance of continuing constructive dialogue with the United States to establish a longer-term framework that minimises uncertainty for exporters and promotes stable trade relations.
It also said it looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the Government and other stakeholders to support these efforts and further strengthen the country’s export competitiveness.
