Sri Lanka’s annual inflation, measured by the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI), increased to 6.5% in June 2026, up from 5.4% in May, according to the Department of Census and Statistics.
The increase was driven by higher food and non-food prices. Food inflation rose to 3.3% in June from 1.5% a month earlier, while non-food inflation increased to 9.3% from 8.6%.
The NCPI rose to 222.3 points in June from 218.8 points in May, reflecting a monthly increase of 1.6%. Food items contributed 1.11 percentage points to the monthly increase, while non-food items accounted for 0.49 percentage points.
Meanwhile, core inflation, which excludes volatile food, energy and transport prices, stood at 5.0% year-on-year in June. On a monthly basis, core inflation increased by 0.8%.
The Department also said the general price level in June 2026 was 122.3% higher than the 2021 base year. The next NCPI release for July 2026 is scheduled for August 21.
The National Consumer Price Index is one of Sri Lanka’s main measures of inflation and tracks changes in the prices of goods and services purchased by households. Businesses, consumers and policymakers monitor the index closely as changes in inflation can influence household spending, business costs and future economic policy decisions.
