Rapid gains in technology stocks can create enormous wealth. However, sharp market corrections can erase billions within days. That reality was highlighted this week as Elon Musk recorded the largest personal wealth decline ever linked to a fall in a publicly traded company’s market value.
The world’s richest individual lost an estimated $350 billion from his personal fortune in just one week after a sharp decline in SpaceX shares.
According to Forbes calculations, Musk’s net worth fell from $1.45 trillion to just under $1.1 trillion, following a nearly 30% drop in SpaceX’s share price from its recent peak.
Biggest Wealth Decline on Record
The decline exceeds the entire fortune of the world’s second-richest individual, Larry Page, whose net worth is estimated at just over $299 billion.
Musk became the world’s first trillionaire earlier this month after the record-breaking public listing of SpaceX, the company behind his rocket, satellite, and artificial intelligence businesses.
Investor enthusiasm initially pushed SpaceX shares up by as much as 67% during the first three trading days after its initial public offering.
That rally briefly lifted the company’s valuation above $2.9 trillion.
SpaceX Loses Nearly $928 Billion in Market Value
The momentum has since reversed.
SpaceX shares have fallen for three consecutive trading sessions, reducing the company’s market value from approximately $2.9 trillion to just above $2 trillion.
The decline represents a loss of around $928 billion in market capitalization.
On Monday alone, the stock fell 16.4%, marking its largest daily decline since becoming a listed company.
Despite the sell-off, SpaceX shares closed at $154, remaining above the company’s initial public offering price of $135.
Investors React to New Fundraising Plans
Market pressure intensified after SpaceX revealed plans for its first investment-grade bond offering.
The company is seeking to raise at least $20 billion to support its expanding artificial intelligence investments.
The announcement renewed investor concerns about the growing capital requirements facing major technology companies competing in the AI sector.
While SpaceX stated that it currently holds more than $100 billion in cash, markets appear increasingly focused on how technology firms will finance future AI-related spending.
Musk’s Wealth Remains Tied to SpaceX
A large portion of Musk’s wealth is linked directly to the value of SpaceX.
His fortune includes a 38% stake in SpaceX, an 11% stake in Tesla, and ownership interests in several other technology ventures.
As a result, changes in SpaceX’s market valuation have a direct impact on his personal net worth.
This is not the first time Musk has experienced a major decline in wealth. In 2022, his fortune reportedly fell by approximately $165 billion following a sharp drop in Tesla shares.
What It Means for Investors
The reversal highlights how quickly valuations can change in high-growth technology sectors, particularly those linked to artificial intelligence.
The sharp correction in SpaceX shares suggests that investors are becoming more cautious after the strong rally that followed the company’s public listing.
For markets, the episode also raises broader questions about whether investor expectations for AI-driven growth can continue to justify the massive valuations currently assigned to some of the world’s largest technology companies.
