The launch of self-service ticketing kiosks and online bus reservations marks another step towards introducing digital services into Sri Lanka’s public transport sector, offering passengers more control over how they plan and book long-distance travel.
As part of the renovation of the Central Bus Stand in Colombo and the broader public transport modernization initiative, SLT-MOBITEL provided key digital infrastructure and technology solutions aimed at improving passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
One of the most notable additions is the installation of self-service ticketing kiosks at the Makumbura Multimodal Centre (MMC), allowing passengers to check seat availability, select seats, and purchase tickets without having to wait in queues at traditional ticket counters.
The kiosks complement the newly launched online bus ticket reservation platform, currently operating on the Makumbura–Matara and Makumbura–Galle routes. Together, these systems are designed to make long-distance bus travel more convenient and predictable for passengers.
Beyond ticketing, SLT-MOBITEL also introduced digital display systems that provide real-time bus schedules and public information, while Wi-Fi connectivity has been made available across passenger areas at the terminal.
The project reflects a broader shift in public transport planning, where technology is increasingly being used to improve service delivery rather than focusing solely on physical infrastructure upgrades.
For passengers, the changes mean easier access to travel information, advance seat reservations, and reduced waiting times. For transport operators and regulators, digital systems can provide greater visibility into passenger demand, ticket sales, scheduling, and operational performance.
The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, the National Transport Commission, the Sri Lanka Transport Board, bus operators, and other stakeholders.
Authorities plan to gather feedback from commuters and operators during the pilot phase before considering future expansion to additional routes and transport hubs.
Passengers can currently reserve seats through www.busticket.gov.lk, the newly installed self-service kiosks at Makumbura, or the dedicated hotline service.
The project highlights how digital tools are gradually becoming part of everyday public transport services, helping create a more organised and user-friendly travel experience for commuters.
