CMC Apparel Launched to Link NVQ Training with Women’s Employment

Many public programmes that support women’s livelihoods focus on asset distribution. In the past, this often included sewing machines. However, these efforts did not always deliver lasting results.

Against this background, the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has launched CMC Apparel, a dedicated workspace for young women who complete a one-year NVQ course.

The programme aims to turn training into real work opportunities. Participants receive hands-on experience in pattern making, pattern grading, and apparel design. As a result, they can apply their skills in a structured and supportive environment.

During the launch, students from both current and past NVQ batches displayed their work. Their presentations showed how training outcomes can translate into employable skills.

Shift toward sustainable support

Speaking at the event, Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar said earlier initiatives did not always work as intended. In some cases, sewing machines remained unused or were sold.

She explained that CMC Apparel takes a different approach. The workspace links training, infrastructure, and access to work. Therefore, resources directly support income generation and long-term skill development.

The Mayor described the initiative as a “small but bold step forward.” She also reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to building sustainable systems for women’s empowerment.

Employment-focused approach

By connecting vocational education with a shared workspace, the programme aims to improve employment outcomes. It also targets women in urban communities who struggle to turn training into steady income.

CMC officials said the initiative will help participants build confidence, improve productivity, and gain market-ready experience.
