US Maritime Commission Discusses Colombo Port’s Future with SLPA

US Maritime Commission Discusses Colombo Port’s Future with SLPA

A delegation from the US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has discussed the future of the Port of Colombo with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).

The delegation was led by FMC Chairman Laura DiBella and Commissioner Robert J. Harvey. They met the SLPA Chairman and senior officials to discuss port operations, services, capacity and future development.

The talks also covered changes in international shipping and the growing role of regional ports. Both sides discussed the need for stronger maritime links and more resilient supply chains.

The SLPA Chairman said port development across the region can support trade and make global supply chains more flexible.

He also highlighted Colombo’s continued development and capacity expansion. These remain important as the port serves shipping networks across the Indian Ocean.

The delegation and SLPA officials also discussed current port services and development programmes. They looked at future plans and issues affecting shipping lines and other maritime businesses.

The FMC is an independent US agency that regulates the country’s international ocean transportation system. Its mission includes promoting a competitive and reliable shipping system.

The visit comes as Colombo continues to attract attention from international maritime stakeholders. FMC Chairman DiBella is also in Colombo for the 8th Colombo International Maritime and Logistics Conference.
