USD 25 Million FIFA Plan Could Bring New Stadium and More Football Grounds

USD 25 Million FIFA Plan Could Bring New Stadium and More Football Grounds

Football fans could see a major expansion of football facilities and development programs under a proposed USD 25 million FIFA support for the next four-year cycle.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino discussed the plan with Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage and Football Federation of Sri Lanka President Jaswar Umar.

Proposed support would cover national and youth teams, women’s football, coaches and referees. It would also help expand football facilities at grassroots level.

New International Stadium and More Grounds

One of the biggest proposals is a state-of-the-art international football stadium. The source does not yet give details on its location, capacity or construction timeline. However, the project is part of a wider plan to improve football infrastructure.

Plans are also in place to start developing football grounds in every district from next year.

In addition, FFSL aims to establish around 40 grounds across its member leagues by 2031.

For young players and local football communities, more grounds could create greater access to training and competition.

More Support for Players, Coaches and Women’s Football

The proposed FIFA program would cover several parts of the football system.

National and youth teams are expected to receive support, while women’s football will be another focus. Coaches and referees are also included in the proposed project. FIFA is also expected to provide technical expertise and infrastructure support for a national high-performance centre.

The centre would be developed by the Ministry of Sports with FFSL and would support athlete development, coaching and pathways for elite performers across sports.

Together, the proposed projects aim to expand participation, improve training opportunities and create more facilities for developing football talent. For fans, players and young footballers, the key change could come from having more places to play and better pathways to develop their skills.

The proposals still need to move from plans to implementation, with specific details on several projects yet to be announced.
