Amazon tops US$3 trillion market value as AI drives cloud growth

Amazon tops US trillion market value as AI drives cloud growth

Amazon’s market value surpassed US$3 trillion for the first time on Monday after strong quarterly earnings and faster growth in its cloud business boosted investor confidence.

The company’s shares rose 5.5% to a record US$286.20, extending their gains for the year to more than 23%.

Investor optimism gathered pace after Amazon reported its strongest cloud computing growth in more than four years. The company also increased its forecast for annual investment spending, signalling continued confidence in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure.

AI investments gain investor support

Amazon has invested billions of dollars to expand its AI infrastructure as competition among technology companies intensifies.

In April, the company announced a new investment in Anthropic. Earlier this year, it also said it would invest up to US$50 billion in OpenAI, further expanding its AI portfolio.

The market responded positively to Amazon’s investment strategy, while some other major technology companies faced investor concerns over the impact of heavy AI spending on cash flow.

Joins the US$3 trillion club

Amazon reached the US$3 trillion milestone just over two years after its market value first crossed US$2 trillion in June 2024.

The company joins Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet and Nvidia among businesses that have achieved a market value of at least US$3 trillion. Nvidia currently remains the world’s most valuable listed company, with a market value approaching US$5 trillion.
