The Ministry of Digital Economy and GovTech Sri Lanka have taken another step towards increasing digital exports to US$5 billion by 2030.
The two organisations held a national workshop titled “The Road to US$5 Billion” on 31 July at Cinnamon Life, Colombo. They organised the event with technical support from the World Bank Group.
The workshop aimed to review the proposed roadmap, confirm its recommendations and gather industry feedback before finalising the plan.
Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Chairman of GovTech Sri Lanka and Chief Presidential Advisor on the Digital Economy, and Victor Antonypillai, IFC Principal Country Officer of the World Bank Group, delivered the opening remarks.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri and Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Economy Waruna Sri Dhanapala also attended. Representatives from the public and private sectors joined the discussions.
Roadmap focuses on exports, skills and innovation
KPMG’s local and international consultants prepared the Sri Lanka Information Technology Industry Assessment Report and the proposed Strategic Roadmap with technical support from the World Bank Group.
The Ministry of Digital Economy, GovTech Sri Lanka and the Industry Development Committee reviewed both documents before the workshop. Participants then shared their views and suggestions to help improve the roadmap.
The discussions focused on digital skills, innovation, support for independent professionals, global market access and digital exports. Participants also explored the policies, investment and infrastructure needed to support long-term industry growth.
They also discussed how artificial intelligence is changing business models and job roles. In addition, they explored ways to increase exports of locally developed digital products and intellectual property.
Next steps
Participants reviewed implementation priorities, institutional responsibilities and performance indicators. They also discussed how each stakeholder could contribute to achieving the roadmap’s goals.
The Ministry said the roadmap will provide a practical framework to improve the global competitiveness of the digital industry. It also aims to create high-quality jobs, support entrepreneurship and expand the global reach of locally developed digital products and services.
The Ministry will now update the roadmap using feedback received during the workshop. The final version will identify priority actions, responsible institutions, implementation timelines and measurable performance indicators.
The workshop brought together information technology and digital services companies, industry associations, startups, investors, independent professionals, universities, research institutions, government agencies, overseas professionals and international development partners.
