Sri Lanka has taken another step to improve public transport with the arrival of 104 new Metro buses.
The Government imported the buses from Foton International Corporation, a leading vehicle manufacturer in China. It signed the import agreement in May as part of a plan to improve the country’s bus services.
First batch reaches the country
The first batch of 104 Metro buses arrived in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
The Government plans to use the new buses to improve service quality and make daily travel more comfortable. Once the authorities complete inspections and registration, they can add the buses to the public transport fleet.
What commuters can expect
Many people rely on public buses every day. However, older buses and service delays continue to affect daily travel.
The new buses can help replace ageing vehicles and improve services on busy routes. As a result, passengers could enjoy a more comfortable and reliable journey.

The arrival of the buses could also support the wider economy. As transport operators expand their services, they may need more drivers, conductors, mechanics and other support staff.
In addition, a larger fleet can increase demand for vehicle servicing, spare parts and maintenance work. This can create more opportunities for businesses that support the public transport sector.
Overall, the first batch marks the beginning of the fleet upgrade. More buses are expected to arrive under the programme, bringing Sri Lanka closer to a more modern public transport system.
