Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa met a visiting United States congressional delegation on Wednesday to discuss ways to strengthen ties between Sri Lanka and the U.S.
The delegation was led by Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan, a member of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee and an Air Force veteran.
The discussions focused on economic cooperation, governance, education and regional stability.
During the meeting, Premadasa thanked the U.S. for its continued support for Sri Lanka’s economy. He also recalled the quota access introduced during the administration of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa, saying it helped expand the garment industry, create jobs and increase export earnings.
Houlahan reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting democratic values, economic stability and continued engagement with Sri Lanka.
Both sides also discussed strengthening democratic institutions, improving transparency and accountability, expanding access to education and creating more sustainable economic opportunities.
