New Doppler Weather Radar Network Aims to Improve Early Warnings for Extreme Weather

New Doppler Weather Radar Network Aims to Improve Early Warnings for Extreme Weather

Weather forecasts are about more than deciding whether to carry an umbrella. Farmers, fishermen, airlines, emergency responders and local authorities all rely on accurate weather information. Better forecasts help protect lives, reduce economic losses and improve planning.

That is why the Government is investing in a new Doppler Weather Radar Network. The project aims to strengthen weather forecasting and provide earlier warnings when severe weather approaches.

The project reached another milestone this week when Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd.) visited the construction site in Puttalam to review its progress.

A step towards better weather forecasting

Japan is funding the Doppler Weather Radar Network through a grant. The new system will help the country monitor weather conditions more accurately. It will also improve forecasts and provide earlier warnings during severe weather.

Before the site visit, Director General of the Department of Meteorology A.L.K. Wijemannage explained the project’s objectives and how the radar network will strengthen weather monitoring.

Project engineers also updated the Defence Secretary on construction work, recent progress and the implementation schedule.

Officials expect to begin installing the radar system in January next year. They plan to complete the entire project by the end of July next year.

Why this project matters?

A Doppler weather radar does more than detect rain. It helps meteorologists track storms in real time and improve forecast accuracy. It also gives authorities more time to issue warnings for heavy rain, strong winds and other dangerous weather.

Better weather information supports faster decisions during emergencies. It also helps farmers, airlines, fishermen and transport operators prepare for changing conditions.

As extreme weather becomes more common, reliable forecasting is becoming more important for both public safety and economic activity.

Improving disaster preparedness

After the inspection, the Defence Secretary said he was satisfied with the progress of the project. He also stressed the need to complete the work on schedule.

No one can prevent extreme weather. However, better forecasting gives authorities and communities more time to prepare. Once completed, the new radar network is expected to strengthen early warning systems and improve the country’s ability to respond to severe weather.
