Gold prices in the local market moved sharply higher on June 15 as global gold prices continued to rise, pushing retail rates to new highs in Colombo’s gold trading market.
The increase followed a surge in international gold prices, which climbed to US$4,325 in global trading, according to market sources.
Sovereign Prices Rise
The price of a 22-carat gold sovereign was recorded at Rs. 360,600 in the Colombo Sea Street gold market on June 15.
Traders reported that local gold prices increased by approximately Rs. 6,000 compared with rates recorded at 9.00 a.m. on the same day.
Meanwhile, the price of a 24-carat gold sovereign increased from Rs. 386,000 on June 13 to Rs. 392,000 on June 15.
Global Market Impact
Gold prices in the local market typically move in line with international price trends and currency movements.
The latest increase reflects the impact of rising global gold prices on domestic jewellery and bullion markets.
Market participants will continue to monitor international developments as fluctuations in global gold prices remain a key factor influencing local rates.
