Hanif Yusoof Takes Investment Pitch to Washington

Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof has used a visit to Washington D.C. to promote Sri Lanka as an investment destination, focusing on sectors that could play a significant role in the country’s next phase of economic growth.

During meetings at the U.S. Department of State, Yusoof held discussions with U.S. Under Secretary of State Jacob Helberg on strengthening economic cooperation and attracting American investment into key sectors of the economy.

While such meetings are often viewed as diplomatic engagements, the discussions reflect a broader challenge facing Sri Lanka: converting international interest into actual investment projects that generate jobs, foreign exchange earnings, and long-term economic activity.

According to Yusoof, sectors such as ports, logistics, energy, and data centres were identified as areas where American capital, technology, and expertise could contribute to future development. These sectors have increasingly become a focus for policymakers seeking to position Sri Lanka as a regional services and logistics hub.

The Governor’s comments also highlighted how the country’s economic strategy has evolved since the 2022 crisis. He noted that Sri Lanka’s recovery depends on becoming more open to international partnerships and creating an environment that encourages foreign investment.

As Special Envoy for Foreign Investment, Yusoof said part of his role is to communicate the country’s economic potential to global investors and decision-makers. He argued that Sri Lanka’s advantages extend beyond its size, citing its strategic location, institutional capabilities, and ability to connect regional markets.

The emphasis on attracting foreign direct investment comes as Sri Lanka continues efforts to rebuild investor confidence following the economic crisis. While economic stability has improved in recent years, sustained investment remains essential for expanding productive sectors, creating employment, and supporting export growth.

The timing of the discussions is also significant. Sri Lanka is seeking to attract higher-value investments rather than relying solely on traditional sectors. Areas such as logistics, digital infrastructure, energy, and technology services are increasingly viewed as industries capable of generating long-term economic returns.

Yusoof said the discussions with Under Secretary Helberg were constructive and reflected an interest in exploring future cooperation. However, the success of such engagements will ultimately be measured not by meetings or statements, but by whether they lead to concrete investment commitments and projects on the ground.

For Sri Lanka, the challenge remains clear: turning international attention into tangible economic outcomes. As competition for global investment intensifies across the region, sustained engagement with major economies such as the United States will be an important part of that effort.
