BYD Yangwang U9 Electric Supercar Breaks 500 km/h Barrier with New Speed Record

BYD Yangwang U9 Electric Supercar Breaks 500 km/h Barrier with New Speed Record

BYD has taken electric car performance beyond 500 km/h, with its luxury Yangwang U9 Xtreme reaching a top speed of 503.17 km/h in Abu Dhabi.

The achievement makes it the first production car to cross the 500 km/h mark. It also sets a new record for an electric production car.

The high-speed run took place on November 1 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. German racing driver Marc Basseng was behind the wheel.

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) officially recognized the achievement. BYD also secured two Guinness World Records for the highest speed achieved by a production car and an electric production car in a single-direction run.

For BYD owners, the achievement offers a closer look at the technology behind the company’s high-performance electric vehicles.

Four electric motors deliver 960 kW of power

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme uses four electric motors, each capable of producing up to 240 kW. Together, they deliver a combined peak output of 960 kW. This gives the electric supercar the power needed to reach extreme speeds.

The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds.

However, producing high power is only part of the challenge. A car travelling above 500 km/h must also maintain stability, control and temperature levels.

The U9 Xtreme uses an active suspension system to support stability and control at high speeds. Its battery and thermal-management systems also help handle the demands of high-performance electric driving.

These technologies show how electric motors, battery systems and vehicle controls work together in a high-performance car.

How BYD reached 503.17 km/h?

BYD’s latest achievement followed an earlier speed record of 496.22 km/h. The same car set that record in Germany in September 2025. For the Abu Dhabi attempt, engineers spent two days preparing the vehicle and testing conditions.

They worked with local authorities to close a 10-kilometre section of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Road (E11). The closed section included a seven-kilometre straight.

The car first completed two runs on October 31. It reached a maximum speed of 490 km/h during those attempts.

Engineers then adjusted the vehicle’s aerodynamics, suspension settings and tyre pressures.

These changes aimed to improve stability and performance. Two more runs followed on November 1, with the second reaching 503.17 km/h.

What this means for BYD owners?

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme shows how far BYD has pushed its electric vehicle engineering. Its four-motor system, active suspension and battery management technology demonstrate the performance potential of electric powertrains.

However, the U9 Xtreme is a high-performance luxury supercar. Its specifications do not represent the performance of every BYD model.

The wider importance lies in the engineering work behind the record. Developing vehicles that operate at extreme speeds requires careful control of power, heat, suspension and aerodynamics.

For BYD owners, the record provides an interesting look at the technology being developed within the same automotive group behind their vehicles.

The 503.17 km/h run also improves on the company’s previous record. It puts BYD’s Yangwang brand among the names making history in high-performance electric cars.
